Leeds United were linked with Matej Vydra last week (The Mirror, 22/11, page 74), and while signing the former Championship Golden Boot winner would certainly bolster the Whites’ frontline it doesn’t seem as if that deal is going to happen.
In fact, it doesn’t seem as if many January deals are going to happen as Phil Hay has delivered a triple transfer update, and it’s not good news for the Yorkshire club
What’s been said then?
The Scottish journalist was hosting a post-match Q&A session on The Athletic after United beat Reading 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

Inevitably, the reporter was asked about Leeds’ January transfer window plans as names such as Jarrod Bowen, Dwight Gayle and Matej Vydra were thrown at him.
“Bowen would be great but I don’t see the numbers adding up. Leeds don’t have much cash to spend. Vydra’s a no-no on the basis of the way it went last time they tried to sign him. They like Dwight Gayle but he’ll be too pricey and will probably go to Forest. If Nketiah stays, I’m not sure I see the club doing anything next month.”
Terrible news
It must be sickening for United fans to read this update.
It seems that every January Leeds are linked with these names that would give them the edge in terms of pushing for promotion, but they never seem to come to fruition. One of the biggest examples this year was Dan James, a player who was even through the doors at Elland Road before the deal was pulled.
Gayle, Vydra or Bowen would all add some much-needed goals to United’s squad, but it doesn’t seem that any of these players will be coming in.
Bowen has netted 11 times in 2019/20 while Gayle bagged 24 in the Championship last season. As for Vydra, he’s got 65 goals at the same level.
We’ve known United have been cutting it fine with FFP, but it’s still not nice to hear that they won’t be landing any of these three big-name signings.
In other news, many Leeds fans were left frustrated by one man after their win over Reading on Tuesday
