Leeds United defender Ben White impressed again during his team’s 5-1 pre-season friendly win against Tadcaster Albion on Wednesday, and he is already delivering on Victor Orta’s promise when the Brighton centre-back joined.
On the chalkboard
With Pontus Jansson departing for Brentford, the Yorkshire outfit are short of options at the heart of the defence right now, with Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi the only two senior players available.
However, 20-year-old White has arrived from the Seagulls on July 1, and the early signs are that he is capable of stepping up as a starter for the Championship promotion hopefuls during the 2019/20 campaign.
When he signed, Orta explained about the process of bringing the youngster to Elland Road, saying: “It’s difficult to find a centre-back with his quality with the ball, with his pace, he always defends really high.
“With his intensity, and with his experience in League Two and League One, he’s a professional player that’s always passing the challenges of his career.”

Decent showing
White started alongside Leif Davis in the middle of the backline on Wednesday and followed up his impressive debut against Guiseley, showing he has the attributes that were mentioned when he put pen to paper on the season-long loan deal.
The Yorkshire Evening Post gave him a 7/10 rating for his latest display, and they too picked up on his ball-playing abilities as well as some of the impressive diagonal passes he played on the night.
Of course, it was hardly the highest level of opposition, but his fundamental qualities are still there for all to see.
Given Marcelo Bielsa’s lack of options right now and if no other new centre-back signings arrive before the window slams shut, White could easily find himself in the starting XI for the trip to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City on August 4.

He may never have played above League One level before, but he looks ready to take his chance and repay the faith shown in him by Orta and Co.
