Caen fans displayed their discontent with Mbappe's decision as they unfurled several banners with messages for the new club owner during the club's Ligue 2 fixture against Clermont Foot on Friday. Per , right before kick-off, the members of the Malherbe Normandy Kop unfurled the first banner that read: "Here, only work and loyalty make legends." The next two banners read: "Before wanting to shine internationally, respect local figures", and "Mbappe, the SMC is not your toy".

The Real Madrid star completed a surprise takeover of the Ligue 2 side on July 31. His company Interconnected Ventures purchased a majority stake in the French club via its investment arm Coalition Capital and Mbappe reportedly pumped €15 million (£12m/$16) of his own money into the venture. Since the France captain's takeover, Caen's performances have not been up to the mark as they currently find themselves 16th in the league. The series of poor results prompted the owner to part ways with manager Seube last Sunday.

Despite the fans' anger, new head coach Bruno Baltazar was not disrespected, although a few whistles were heard during the announcement of his name. After the game, Baltazar told reporters: "The fans are the heart of the club. Their reaction is normal. Of course, I would like to enter a project with a different context. It is my responsibility to change the situation, to bring back victories and to give pride to the fans. It takes a lot of victories to change all that."
