According to an exclusive report from the Sun, while Tottenham are allegedly ready to offload club record flop Tanguy Ndombele, Spurs have got prolific South American starlet Darwin Nunez firmly in their sights – but could face a £15 million transfer battle with Brighton for his signature.
Nunez, who bagged 16 goals over 2019/2020 for Almeria in the Spanish second division, could be seen as an unlikely striking back up to superstar Harry Kane and a potential transfer wildcard.
Callum Wilson and Josh King, according to reliable football.london journalist Alasdair Gold, currently head the list of likely targets – with Nunez and Burnley striker Chris Wood also mentioned in passing.
Now, a report from the Sun claims he is actually on the list – but Brighton are also monitoring his situation as they search for attackers who can strengthen their survival grip next season.
As the 2020/2021 Premier League campaign looms, Spurs could be running out of time to land a talismanic alternative to Kane at a bargain price – with chairman Daniel Levy reportedly motivated to navigate the market with due care.
Financial circumstances brought about by a worldwide global pandemic have seen Spurs borrow £175 million through the Bank of England to stave off losses (The Athletic), but some careful negotiation has still bagged the club Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and Joe Hart for a net spend £16.4 million.
However, to land Nunez, Spurs will have to take that figure to over £30m unless Levy can haggle his way down to a lower asking price.
Whether or not the Uruguayan becomes a top target for Tottenham remains to be seen, but it could be interesting to see how the window plays out.
